Red Moon by David McAdoo
Mox, a small dog, has been having ominous dreams of a red moon. When a friend, a stray named Daeden, breaks Mox out of captivity, the two of them set off on a quest to find the Master of the Region, a very wise, very old creature who may know the meaning of the visions. But Mox is not the only animal to have ever had visions of a red moon. The crows believe that the red moon heralds the end of mankind and the start of the crows' reign. And they believe that it all begins with Mox's death.
A sequel, Shadow of the Red Moon, is in the works, and since Red Moon's ending left me wanting to know what came next, I'm looking forward to reading it.
This animal story has obvious appeal to Brian Jacques and Erin Hunter fans. The first part of the book is a quest story, but partway through the book, the apocalypse looms and the tension ratchets up considerably. Suggest it to fans of post-apocalyptic stories who are willing to wait a bit for the apocolypse.
