Looking for a cheap and simple craft for your anime club? This one was a breeze, and since Naruto is one of the most popular manga series out there, it elicited instant enthusiasm from the teens. All you need is some solid coloured material, grey fun foam, glue guns, and some black and silver sharpies. I found blue and black cloth in the sheet section of a thrift store, and dollar stores usually have fun foam for cheap. Make sure the piece of material is long enough that it can be tied around your head with at least 6 inches of tail hanging down your back.
Simply cut off a long strip of material for the headband, cut a rectangle (round the corners) out of grey fun foam, and glue the foam onto the headband. Use a black sharpie to draw the ninja village symbol of your choice on the fun foam. If you want to make it neater, hem your headband using a glue gun instead of thread. One of the teens at anime club got creative and discovered that you can make raised rivets on the fun foam by putting a dab of glue on the fun foam and then colouring it with a silver sharpie once it has cooled. Make sure you have a bunch of copies of Naruto around so the teens can look through and decide which village symbol they want to align themselves with.
After everyone had finished making their headbands, I grabbed the library's digital camera and did a photo shoot with the teens. I took some pictures inside, and then we went outside into the parking lot, where a couple of them posed ninja-like in the trees for more pictures. Most of the teens were wearing their headbands the next time they came to the library, and some even wore them to school. Not only did it turn out to be great advertising for the anime club, but other anime fans recognised the headbands and paid the teens compliments, which was great for their egos.
