Gakuen Alice by Tachibana Higuchi

Mikan is heartbroken because her best friend is going away to a prestigious school for geniuses called the Alice Academy.  Despite not being anything near as smart as a genius, Mikan is determined not to be separated from her friend, and runs away to join her.

The Alice Academy is no ordinary school, though.  Every student there has an "alice" or special ability.  Some students can fly, others can charm wild animals, or a few can invent anything they can think of.  If Mikan wants to stay at the Alice Academy, she'll have to discover her own alice, and prove to the teachers that she belongs there.  Even if she can satisfy the teachers, there are still her fellow students, most of whom would like to see Mikan kicked out on her behind.

Gakuen Alice has been getting lots of chatter at my anime club.  Despite the fact that Mikan is very young (about 10), the series is hugely popular with teen girls of all age.  Rated T for teen.  There's also an anime series and a drama CD based on the manga.
