While looking for a new story to tell at my storytelling circle, I discovered a tale from Zimbabwe called The Egg Prince in the book The Starlight Princess and Other Princess Stories by Annie Dalton. I've since told the story to several groups of 11/12 year-olds while promoting the library's teen summer reading club.In the story, a king's dying wife tells him to take care of a large egg in the hopes of it giving him a son, but it isn't until the king gets a wife for the egg that magic happens.
