World War Two: Under the Shadow of the Swastika by Lewis Helfand and Lalit Kumar Sharma

This graphic novel mixes historical figures, photographs, and imaginary people to tell the story of World War Two. Telling the story of such a large theatre of war could distance the reader from it, but the art of focuses on faces, and using the point of view of ordinary people, both real and imagined, keeps that from happening. I found the movement of troops to be much easier to understand than anything I have read before.

Included after the story are a timeline, a map showing troop movements, and short descriptions of other aspects of the war, such as art and the infamous Death Match in Kiev.
